How soon before a facelift do I need to stop getting Botox?
If you are preparing for a facelift or eyelid lift, you will want to talk with your plastic surgeon about any Botox® or dermal filler treatments you have had or plan to get.
If you are only getting a lower face and/or neck lift, upper face Botox is not a concern
A traditional facelift is usually performed on the lower face and neck to address facial descent, jowls, wrinkles, and sagging in the neck. Since Botox treatments are most often injected into the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet, the treatment areas may not overlap.
Share all dermal filler treatments with your surgeon
If you have received dermal fillers, talk with your plastic surgeon about where and when you received your treatments, no matter how long ago you had your last appointment. Dermal fillers in areas like the cheeks, tear troughs, nasolabial folds, and jawline may affect your surgeon’s plan for when or how to perform your facelift—or any other procedures that they may recommend for a balanced appearance.
Ideally, be Botox- and filler-free for your consultation
If possible, it’s ideal for your surgeon to see your face and evaluate your needs after any Botox has worn off (3-4 months) and any dermal filler has dissolved (duration varies based on the filler used). This will give them the ability to best evaluate your needs and make a procedure recommendation.
Further, Botox can affect your brow position, so if you are considering a brow lift or any work in the upper face, it’s important to schedule your consultation after the neurotoxin has worn off. From there, your surgeon can answer any questions you have about how repeat injectable treatments may affect the timing of your surgery. After recovery, most facelift patients return to their injectables treatments to maintain and extend their surgical results.
