FYI, Dehydration is Making Your Wrinkles Look Worse

The role hydration plays in our skin’s health and appearance is more significant than we might assume. While our Hagerstown medspa offers advanced treatments to combat signs of aging, we also emphasize the importance of fundamental skincare practices, including staying hydrated. Here, we share how dehydration impacts your skin’s appearance and what you can do to ensure your skin remains as youthful and vibrant as possible.

How does dehydration affect your skin?

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in, leaving it unable to maintain optimal hydration levels. This imbalance directly impacts your skin (your body’s largest organ!) and causes noticeable changes in appearance and texture.

When you are dehydrated, your skin loses elasticity and plumpness. This has a shriveling effect on the skin which exaggerates existing fine lines and wrinkles and can form new creases. Your lymphatic system moves fluid throughout your body and is responsible for delivering nutrients and removing toxins and waste from your skin cells. Without enough water, your lymph system becomes more sluggish and less effective at this vital process. As a result, your complexion can become dull and tired-looking and age your appearance.

Additionally, because a lack of hydration slows down your body’s regenerative process, it’s harder for the skin to protect itself from environmental stressors, which also accelerate skin aging.

Dehydration lines vs. wrinkles

Dehydration lines are often temporary and appear as fine, shallow lines on the skin’s surface. They are a direct result of insufficient moisture and can be reversed once you are hydrated. On the other hand, true wrinkles are deeper, more permanent folds that we can soften or erase with Botox®. Wrinkles form when the natural aging process and environmental factors, such as sun damage, break down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. Collagen and elastin are proteins that give your skin a firmer structure and bounce.

You can help prevent highlighting your lines and wrinkles (and support every single process in your body) by prioritizing a holistic approach to proper hydration:

Hydration from the inside out

Drinking plenty of water daily is crucial for maintaining skin hydration. The general recommendation is to consume eight 8oz glasses of water per day, adjusting appropriately when you are active or sick. You can also eat foods with high water content, such as fruits and vegetables, to help reach and maintain good moisture levels in your skin.

Another option is hydrating skincare products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, to draw moisture into the skin and lock it in. This can help minimize visible dehydration effects on the skin.

“Today I met Shelby and had a diamond glow facial! Shelby is awesome and very educational, I learned a lot from her and left with glowing skin! I can’t wait to go back and see her! I also had lip filler completed with Dr. Garazo today, as always he does a fantastic job and I’m very pleased with my results!”

The skincare approach

Professional treatments are especially effective in alleviating dehydrated skin and improving the premature signs of aging. Here are our top treatment recommendations to rejuvenate dehydrated skin:

  • Microneedling: Microneedling boosts collagen and enhances skin hydration. It works by using tiny punctures in the skin that trigger the regenerative process and allow for greater absorption of moisturizing products. This treatment also improves overall skin texture and elasticity.
  • Dermaplaning: Dermaplaning reveals a smoother, brighter complexion by gently removing the top layer of dead skin and fine facial hair with a thin scalpel blade. This exfoliation method also helps skincare products penetrate deeper into the skin.
  • Chemical peels: Chemical peels accelerate skin renewal by using a specialized solution to remove the outermost layers of skin to uncover the softer, more hydrated skin beneath. Peels are customized to your skin’s needs, targeting dehydration, uneven skin tone, and fine lines.
  • Facials: Facials offer customized hydration therapy and are tailored to address your specific skin concerns, including dehydration. We use a blend of hydrating cleansers, serums, masks, and creams to deeply moisturize the skin, leaving it plump, radiant, and beautifully hydrated. Our DiamondGlow® facial is ideal for nourishing dry skin.

Pro tip: Swap your drugstore products for physician-only skincare. These products contain higher concentrations of active ingredients than over-the-counter options. A good skincare regimen is your daily defense against dehydration and also provides consistent protection from environmental damage.
